Hope from Within

Progress Report: April 2005

The Spay/Neuter Assistance Program delivered free spay/neuter services April 4-6 in Kayenta at the Chapter House parking lot. They provided a total of 61 spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats. Thanks to PetSmart Charities for their support of this program. In conjunction with this event, KACS networked with many other groups to maximize the services provided.

Due to staff limitations, SNAP is only able to vaccinate animals that get on the spay/neuter truck. KACS solicited donated vaccinations and utilized volunteers to deliver vaccinations for walk-up clients. Because distemper/parvo is so prevalent on the reservation, that was the focus of the walk-up vaccinations. KACS delivered approximately 50 distemper/parvo vaccinations for a reduced-cost donation of $5 (to cover costs, and hopefully purchase vaccinations for other planned s/n weeks) and 10 other vaccinations for cats. KACS wishes to thank Noah's Ark Rescue for donating vaccines, and Alice's Rescue Fund for donating funds to cover vaccines.

KACS participated in rescuing, acquiring vet services for, and transferring 28 animals to other groups. Two other dogs were rescued, but held back, due to medical issues. KACS wishes to thank all the people and organizations that participated in transporting and accepting animals for placement. They include Noah's Ark Animal Rescue in Phoenix, AZ, Northern Arizona Second Chance Center for Animals in Flagstaff, AZ, Boulder Valley Humane, in Boulder, CO, and Colorado 9 Lives Rescue in Colorado Springs, CO. KACS also wishes to thank Best Friends Animal Society for their assistance in transporting animals to Colorado.

We know that getting animals placed in good homes is a time consuming process, and that transferring them is only one step in this process. But without groups willing to accept animals for placement, Kayenta would be in even worse shape than it is now. On behalf of the animals and the community, KACS thanks all these groups for networking and participating with us in helping the animals.

Additional thanks go out to Alice Fennel, Cathy Blaha, Cristy Twombley, Gail Van Slyke, Ed Fritz, Russ Mead, Elizabeth Lennert, Alicia Christie, and Rose Moonwater for their assistance in this endeavor.

Here are some of the animals that were rescued. As a sample of some of the medical issues that the dogs are dealing with, Cowboy (2nd dog from the top, on the right), was rescued from Basha's parking lot where he was being kicked. Cowboy is an apparent distemper survivor, who had mange, and many of his teeth had the enamel stripped off as a result of the distemper. Cowboy was emaciated when he was rescued, and within a months time, his neck expanded by three notches on his collar.

Another example is Freckles (4th dog from the top, on the left), a 10 month old male, accepted by Boulder Valley Humane. Boulder determined that Freckles needed his rear leg amputated due to an old injury that did not heal correctly.
