- September - November, 2008 - A fall series of five low-cost mobile vaccination and spay/neuter clinics were offered every other Tuesday in Kayenta, with services delivered by Dr. Carol Holgate. The outcome of these clinics: 45 dog or cat spay/neuter surgeries; 104 dog and cats vaccinations delivered; in addition, 24 other animals received other subsidized veterinary services. These clinics were subsidized by the Pegasus Foundation, Foundation for Protection of Animals, Best Friends Animal Society, local businesses Hampton Inn, and Burger King of Kayenta, and a couple of private donors. We would also like to thank Shepherd's Eyes Coffee, a local business, for donating the location to have the clinics, and Dr. Carol Holgate, who maintains a stationary clinic in Tuba City, AZ, for her excellent services, hard work, and dedication to the people and animals of the Navajo Nation.
- April - June, 2008 - A spring series of six low-cost mobile vaccination and spay/neuter clinics were offered every other Tuesday in Kayenta, with services delivered by Dr. Carol Holgate. These subsidized clinics received support from The Pegasus Foundation, and local businesses of Hampton Inn, Kayenta, and Burger King of Kayenta. The outcome of these clinics: 73 animals were spayed or neutered; a total of 110 cats and dogs were vaccinated; additionally, other veterinary services were provided. Some local puppies were also rescued, provided with veterinary care, and then were relocated to a rescue group in Utah for adoption. Thank you to everyone who assisted in these efforts, especially Dr. Carol Holgate, and the clinic sponsors and local businesses that supported these efforts. Thank you also to Shepherd's Eyes Coffee, which assisted in hosting the clinics by providing space in their parking lot.
- October, 2007 - Relocation of 6 puppies to a foster no-kill rescue group in Colorado Springs, CO. In addition, Tom Corrigan of Fredonia Humane, in conjunction with Best Friends, rescued a Mom dog and her puppies who all had mange from a gas station.
- September - November, 2007 - Low-cost mobile vaccination and spay/neuter clinics in Kayenta, every other week, subsidized by The Pegasus Foundation, with services provided by Dr. Carol Holgate. 76 spay/neuter surgeries, and 102 vaccines, with other medical services provided also.
- Summer, 2007 - Russ Mann did a charity ride from Massachusetts to Kayenta, to raise money and awareness in support of Kayenta animals, and donated $1800. to KACS. Thank you, Russ!
- July, 2007 - Relocation of 9 gas station dogs to no-kill placement in California. Thank you to Harbor Veterinary Clinic and the Santa Cruz SPCA for their assistance.
- October - December, 2006 - Low-cost mobile vaccination and spay/neuter clinics in Kayenta, every other week, subsidized by The Pegasus Foundation. Dr. Carol Holgate provided 38 spay/neuter surgeries of cats and dogs, and 92 vaccinations, in addition to other medical treatments such as deworming, mange treatment, treatment for parvo, etc.
- October, 2006 - 2 days of free s/n clinic with Plateauland. Data on surgeries and vaccinations and other services will be posted as soon as they are available. Also, Dr. Carol Holgate of Desert View Veterinary Services in Tuba City, is now bringing weekly veterinary services to Kayenta on Mondays, beginning on October 16, 2006, in conjunction with KACS and Kayenta Township.
- September, 2006 - Meeting between Kayenta Township Commissioners, Pegasus Foundation representative, and Kayenta Animal Control & Shelter Board members, Dr. Holgate, and a representative of Saving Animals Across Borders on the topic of supporting the development of the Animal Control program and public-private partnerships.
- September, 2006 - Frank Ramsey hired as consultant to Kayenta Township to develop an Animal Control program for Kayenta, in a 9 month contract.
- September, 2006 - Kayenta Township is moving forward in partnership with KACS towards development of an Animal Control program for Kayenta. Meetings between the KACS board and Township Commissioners were held and resolutions passed, as well as a meeting with
outside humane groups interested in supporting this partnership effort.
- August, 2006 - 1 day of subsidized free spay/neuter services, low-cost vaccinations and veterinary health services for dogs and cats
were provided by Plateauland Mobile Veterinary Clinic, a division of the Second Chance Center of Flagstaff, AZ, on August 16th.
24 free spay/neuters were provided, which included two pregnant dogs.
- July, 2006 - 2 days of subsidized free spay/neuter services, low-cost vaccinations,
and veterinary health services for dogs and cats, were provided by Plateauland Mobile
Veterinary Clinic, a division of the Second Chance Center of Flagstaff, AZ. The
veterinarian was Dr. Carol Holgate, a Navajo veterinarian from Tuba City, AZ. 700
pounds of dog food was donated by the Santa Cruz SPCA for dispensing to the
public. Grant funds were provided by the Pegasus Foundation, The Hampton Inn of
Kayenta, and other grants obtained by the Second Chance Center, including in kind
matching donations of food and veterinary supplies. These groups provided
the subsidies to pay for the spay/neuter services.
Two unspayed female
dogs were rescued and relocated from a local gas station to veterinary services,
adoption and placement into permanent homes in California through networking
with other organizations. One of the females had the Canine Transmissible
Venereal Tumor, a contagious cancer that can spread among stray dogs and make
them very sick. A total of 46 free spay/neuters was provided, and over 150 low-cost vaccinations for dogs and cats. Other health services provided included mange, flea/tick, and parvo treatments.
- June, 2006 - KACS has relocated 40 animals this year so far, mostly to groups in
Flagstaff and Phoenix. The total number of animals saved by KACS is
approximately 500 since August, 2004. This includes approximately 30 local
adoptions. KACS is grateful to partner with numerous groups, including Best
Friends in Kanab, UT, The Second Chance Center in Flagstaff, Noah’s Ark Rescue
in Phoenix, Boulder Valley Humane Society in Boulder, CO, and groups all over
the country.
- May, 2006 - Township passed Animal Control ordinances. It took four drafts to
finally be approved through the Navajo Nation. A 90 day comment period was
given, and then the ordinances were approved into law. These Kayenta Township
ordinances are similar to Navajo Nation law, and also contain more detail and
more thorough animal cruelty regulations. The ordinances will be enforced
through an agent of the Township. Any grievances will be handled by a hearing
officer appointed by the Township.
- May, 2006 - Building plans were completed and two prefabricated steel buildings were delivered. Building one will
contain a dog holding area, adoption area, and isolation and quarantine areas.
The quarantine area is for diseases that are curable and not airborne. Building
two is for a spay/neuter suite and contains a prep area, reception area, and
surgery room. In addition, this building will house a cat adoption area, food prep
area, and office. In the future, KACS also hopes to have another building or trailer
to use for additional office space.
- March, 2006 - Frank Ramsey of KACS attended the ARACEAA Conference and
received 24 hours of training.
- November/December, 2005 - With the support of the Pegasus Foundation, a needs assessment of the Kayenta in regards to the stray population was conducted. Progress has also been made towards gaining 501(c)3 status. The building site has also been graded. Resolutions are moving forward through Kayenta Township.
- September, 2005 - Spay/Neuter Assistance Project (SNAP) provided 105 free spay/neuters with the mobile clinic, and KACS provided more than 100 low-cost canine distemper/parvo vaccinations to residents.

- April, 2005 - Spay/Neuter Assistance Project (SNAP) spent the first of four weeks providing free spay/neuter in Kayenta in 2005. These weeks will occur from April - September, 2005. Read the report on what happened this week.
- March, 2005 - Frank Ramsey of KACS received NACA ACO Level II training in Albuquerque, NM. This completes 80 hours of ACO training.
- February, 2005 - Frank Ramsey of KACS received NACA ACO Level I training in Phoenix, AZ.
- February, 2005 - KACS participated in rescuing puppies from a culvert near McDonald's in Kayenta, and an article about the activities was included in Kayenta Today, which is inserted into the Navajo Times.
- January, 2005 - KACS participated in animal rescue activities, capturing semi-feral female dogs that were abandoned at a remote location and having puppies.
- January, 2005 - KACS and Kayenta Township participated in annual meeting of Navajo Nation Animal Welfare Partners in Flagstaff, AZ, at the Northern Arizona Second Chance Center for Animals.
- January, 2005 - The resolution for 2.0 acres of land to be deeded to KACS was approved through Kayenta Township Commision
- December, 2004 - KACS Board of Directors was established
- August, 2004 - KACS participated in CHAMP conference in Orlando, FL, which included 40 hours of homeless animal managment and policy training
- August, 2004 - KACS achieved non-profit status with the Navajo Nation Corporation Code
- July, 2004 - KACS participated in Rez Rescue, the humane reclaim of 70 animals from the Tuba City Animal Shelter following a roundup by Navajo Nation Animal Control. The animals were placed with humane groups in Arizona, Colorado, and California, for eventual placement to good homes.
- July, 2004 - KACS participated in weeklong Spay/Neuter partnership at Kayenta Chapter House. 260 animals were given free spay/neuter and several hundred received low-cost vaccinations.
